Spring Sonata
Edition of 3
2024
‘Spring Sonata’ is a physical artwork from ‘The Wild Within’, a series that brings new life into abandoned buildings from a bygone era.

Based on real-world physical spaces, a rebirth into the digital realm is created by combining photography with three-dimensional techniques.

This specific building is an abandoned residence from the 1700s situated in Northern Italy. Crumbling walls are adorned with hand-painted scenes depicting the myth of Niobe, painted by Nicolò Contestabili. The structural backdrop provided a canvas for artists Ryan Koopmans and Alice Wexell, inspiring them to unleash their creativity and reinterpret the room, transforming it into a new state.

Koopmans & Wexell have visited many locations around the world over the past decade, exploring ruins and photographing structures that have undergone dramatic transition.

Upon returning, they digitally introduced vegetation, modified the structure and lighting, and altered the scenes with the intention of reviving the empty spaces, essentially bringing life back into the rooms.

The results are a surreal collision between the past and future, natural and manmade, physical and digital, and the real and imaginary.

The aim of the artwork is to create a sense of surreal tranquility whilst referencing the theme of architectural history and its relationship with nature.

Many of the buildings depicted in 'The Wild Within' have been demolished in recent years, further emphasizing the theme of time passing in the cycle of growth and decay.

The artwork is equipped with a physical T.R.A.C.E. chip, a digital Certificate of Authenticity (dCOA) created by Transient Labs. This helps preserve the artwork’s provenance through the use of blockchain technology.
